Looking at Sancerre Rouge

Vines and mist near Bué

Travelled across to Sancerre this morning prior to the big ref tasting tomorrow in time to make five visits. Starting with Gilles Guillerault, Caves du Prieuré in Reigny, followed by Pierre Martin in Chavignol, Christian Salmon in Bué, Jean-Marie Cherrier of Domaine de la Rossignole in the hamley of Chaudoux, Verdigny and then Les Alphonses in Sancerre. Unfortunately the weather got steadily worse during the day.

Bué and Clos de la Poussie in the distance

This evening we were at La Côte des Monts Damnés. Again an excellent dinner with the lovely 1998 Clos de Beaujeu, Sancerre Blanc, Gérard Boulay and the rich but well balanced 2006 Terre de Maimbray Sancerre from Pascal and Nicolas Reverdy.

Pierre Martin, a producer in Chavignol, is delighted
with his 2007 Sancerre Rouge

Detailed notes on the visits to follow.
