2016 Pouilly-Fumé, Château de Tracy

Château de Tracy set in parkland
looking down towards La Loire

2016 Pouilly-Fumé, Château de Tracy

Black label

Although I am undergoing 12 weeks of recovery following my operation on my knee, I am still able to work so was delighted to receive some samples from Château de Tracy. Two wines from 2014: Haute Densité and 101 Rangs. These two will be covered in a later post as this one concentrates on the domaine 2016 Pouilly-Fumé. This is a blend of Tracy's two different terroir: calcaire (limestone) and silex (flint).

The 2016 domaine is very clean and precise, with lightly grassy aromas and an attractive grapefruit flavours. Good to drink now but I anticipate that with additional bottle age it will both take on more weight and gain in complexity.

Another Wine Society treat – Sanchez Romate

Despite its recent renaissance, I'm always surprised that Sherry is not more popular. It offers amazing variety, complexity and largely amazing value. I have already posted on the the continuing quality of La Ina Fino – priced at £9.50 from The Wine Society including delivery. Today we looked at the Amontillado from Sanchez Romate – great value at £8.95 for the complexity it offers with an initial touch of sweetness, mouth-filling with an attractively austere finish.

Possibly as exciting as Alexis Sanchez but at a tiny fraction of his price!

Another Wine Society treat – 2015 Les Vignes Retrouvées, Saint Mont

2015 Les Vignes Retrouvées, AC St Mont,
Plaimont Co-operative

This is another treat from The Wine Society – part of the 30 bottles we ordered. Les Vignes Retrouvées comes from the very well run Plaimont Co-operative. It is billed as a tribute to three local white grape varieties – Gros Manseng, Petit Courbu and Arrufiac.

Les Vignes Retrouvées has more weight and structure than last night's wine – Le Gaillac Perlé but is equally attractive with good length and well balanced. It has sufficient weight to drink well with a a grilled fish or with white meats including a simply roast chicken. Good to see local varieties being given attention.

2016 Le Perlé Gaillac – Esprit de Labastide

Another of our treats from The Wine Society – 2016 Le Perle, Esprit de Labastide, Gaillac. Very refreshing, crisp, lemony apéro – a blend of Loin de l'œil (local variety), Mauzac (SW France variety) and Sauvignon Blanc from the well established Cave Co-operative de Labastide. Dangerous easy to drink – although @ 12% relatively low in alcohol.

I should be in Montpellier this evening .....

Place de la Comedie, Montpellier

But for my slip on black ice on Tuesday 2nd January I would be in Montpellier ready for the Outsiders; tasting tomorrow followed by the three days of the 2018 edition of Millésime Bio

Above my left knee following the slip that detached my quads from my left knee cap. Fortunately following the operation I am slowly recovering but staying in Newtonmore, Scotland instead of the South of France.

Fortunately there are compensations as the Cairngorms is a beautiful part of the World. I'll just have to make plans to be in Montpellier this time next year for Millésime Bio 2019!

Two Spanish treats from The Wine Society for a recovering invalid

 La Ina, Fino, Sherry

It is always reassuring to come back to a favourite and confirm that it is just as good as you remember. La Ina has long been one of my very favourite Finos – against stiff competition it has to be said. When we placed our recent order with The Wine Society we chose three Sherries – one of them La Ina. This fino has is very clean, precise, very well balanced with a touch of saltiness. Truly a real treat.

From an old favourite to a newby:

 3C Premium Selection – Cariñena
from Cariñena

The 3C Premium Selection – Cariñena 2013 is full of soft and delicious black fruits without being cloying with some very gentle tannins. A wine to be enjoyed with food or by itself chatting with friends. A good choice from The Wine Society.

Burns Night 2018 – clash of the titans

25th January is Burns Night – time for the traditional meal of haggis, neeps (swede) and patties. This year we had a horizontal tasting of two haggi – one from local butcher in Kingussie: Donald Gilmour and the other the famous make – MacSween.

Although both were very good, we all agreed that the preferred the one from the local butcher in Kingussie. We thought it was fine and more delicately spiced.

COMMENT L'ARÔME VIENT AU VIN ?
__________________________________________________

Emergency medical supplies from The Wine Society

Ordered in London on Saturday
delivered in Newtonmore Tuesday

Due to slipping on black ice on 2nd January we are up in Newtonmore for rather longer than we anticipated, so time to order some wine from The Wine Society.

We have chosen a couple of mixed cases: a dozen whites from South West France (2 of each) and a dozen Everyday Spanish reds (again 2 of each)

In addition six sherries – two bottles of La Ina Fino, which has long been a favourite, a couple of bottles of  The Society's Fino and two of the Romate Amontillado. We look forward to trying these and will be reporting on them on Jim's Loire.

A suivre

Newtonmore in the dusky snow + update on recuperation

Newtonmore and its mountains towards dusk

From around Tuesday midday till Friday the biggest fall of snow that I have seen for many years has fallen in Newtonmore. Overall I guess more than a foot has fallen over this period. Unfortunately this fall of snow has meant that I cannot get out on my crutches so getting sufficient exercise has been difficult. Anyway two weeks of my 12 weeks of enforced idleness is now over!

However, my impression is that my knee and quads are back gradually communicating with each other. The forecast for tonight and early tomorrow morning is for a very cold night – dropping to -11 by 3 am on Sunday. Next week is due to be warmer so hopefully once the snow has melted, which will take a while given the quantity that has fallen over the past week, I will be able to venture out.

Folle Journée - Nantes 2018

Folle Journée 2018

Details here:

MAISDON SUR SEVRE domainebatardlangelier.fr

Loire news: Domaine Richou + Saget into Muscadet

News from Domaine Richou – 2017

Unfortunately 2017 joins 1945 and 1991 as years when Domaine Richou suffered serious April frost. The domaine was hit on 26th April overall losing 30% of the harvest. Les Rogeries and Le Champ de Pie were 90% wiped out – a total of 5ha 20. In Savennières La Bigotttière (1.30ha) lost 60% of the crop, while two parcels of Cabernet Franc suffered a 50% loss.

Quite early on the Richous decided not to make any Coteaux de l'Aubance in 2017 and instead make une grande cuvée from three parcels – Le Pavillion (schistes and quartz), Le Grand Vau (schistes gréseux and phtanites) and Les Rogeries (only 10% surviving the frost).

Due to a poor flowering the Gamays from Les Chatelliers and Le Champ de la Pierre are down by 40% of normal.

Domaine Richou is now organic.

Laurent Saget

 Saget to invest in Muscadet

The Saget family, growers and négociants in Pouilly-sur-Loire announced today that they are in the process of buying a domaine in Muscadet. The sale will be finalised in March. Apparently they have long been looking to invest in the Pays Nantais.

War over planting rights erupts in Champagne

Vineyards and looking northwards to Reims

News story from Harpers.co.uk

By Barnaby Eales
Published:  16 January, 2018
'A war over planting rights is being waged in France, where Champagne growers want to severely limit new plantings of vines by rival growers in areas surrounding Champagne’s production zone.
Wine growers are aiming to secure planting rights for hundreds of hectares for the production of mainly still, but also sparkling wine as part of the restoration of Ile-de-France, which historically until the 19 century, was one of France’s leading wine regions.'

•••

'Patrice Bersac, Chairman of Syvif - the Ile-de France Growers’ union, said the powerful Champagne Growers’ Union, Syndicat Général des Vignerons de Champagne (SVG), wants to establish a 25 kilometre wide ‘cordon sanitaire’ along the perimeter of Champagne’s production area in which the planting of vines would be prohibited.'

Read the rest here

I can't say I have any sympathy with the Champagne producers wanting to establish a 'cordon sanitaire' around their vineyard where no vines could be planted. After all any sparkling wines from here couldn't be labelled 'Champagne'. OK it might be disappointing for the Champenois if sparkling wines proved to be better than those produced within the designated Champagne region. Tant pis!

Not long ago producers in Sancerre were pushing for a similar ban to stop anyone planting Sauvignon Blanc to produce Vin de Pays close to the Sancerre zone. I have no more sympathy for this demand either. Both are foolish and unnecessary protectionism. Make sure that your wines are impeccable and there will be no problem providing the strict labeling laws are adhered to.

Newtonmore: white stuff on Blue Monday

The start of the snow around 3-3.30 Monday afternoon

Following a few days when it has been warmer making the black ice that unfortunately caused me to slide and rupture my quads from my left knee on Tuesday 2nd January disappear, snow and colder weather has returned to the Scottish Highlands this afternoon with a series of snow showers.Inthe interim I have been able to venture out on my crutches to get some much needed exercise.

Some more snow has fallen this evening lying now on the roads but only a maximum of two inches thick. More is forecast for tonight and tomorrow. Whatever I'm going t have to remain inside while the snow remains – can't afford to do myself further damage ....

After a few snow showers it seems again
to be snow with more determination

Tricky and awkward quiz – can you tell the difference between Château Latour and Chai Latour?

 A

 B

A restaurant called called Chai Latour in the outskirts of Lille has been accused by lawyers acting for Chàteau in Pauillac of potentially confusing the public by its choice of name.

Chai Latour was established some six years ago and chai is a nice pun on chez and is run by Thierry Latour – hence the name.

Although to the uninitiated the two properties shown would appear to be rather different in size and function, there must clearly a possibility of confusion as it is likely that Château Latour is able to be able to afford to hire top lawyers irrespective of expense. It, thus, as one can expect that they have an level of intelligence that matches their hourly rate, it is surely reasonable to assume that these legal eagles do indeed find it difficult to distinguish between Thierry's establishment at 66 rue de Pérenchies, 59237 Verlinghem and the vineyard and winery of Château Latour just to the south of the town of Pauillac.

I wonder whether dispute arises because people have been phoning up Château Latour to book a table or even turning up at the gates demanding to be fed by Thierry Latour? Here is Thierry's carte.

Quiz
Naturally I wish to be helpful so have devised this simple but tricky quiz:

Is Château Latour A or B? Take your time!

A walrus welcome to Forest Hill: successful Crowdfunding

Thanks to your generous donation, the project will now become a reality 🚀
In just 75 hours, the SE23 community donated over £2,500 - an astonishing success!

We raised a slight excess, which will be used as contingency for the project, with any remaining funds donated to the Forest Hill Society (a local non-profit organisation).

Stay tuned to SE23.life for further updates on the progress of this project.

•••

Details of the project
Lionel Stanhope's murals have become a popular hallmark of South London, and with your help, Forest Hill is getting in on the action.

Design
The Forest Hill mural design features a nod to the walrus mascot of our local treasure, the Horniman Musuem.

The design and colour was decided by a poll of local residents on SE23.life, after a call for submissions from local artists.

In order to distinguish Forest Hill’s mural from the blue and yellow colour scheme of Brockley’s design, Lionel will tweak the yellow colour (shown in the mock-up) to a London Overground orange.

Location
The site for this mural will be Waldram Crescent (AKA South Circular) under the railway bridge, on the eastern side as indicated here:
